Historic Farm House, Extensively Renovated - $699,000

Hillary Thompson House

The Hillary Thompson House, built around 1830, is located 3 miles north of I-540 in Raleigh, North Carolina. This 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath property sits on a park-like 2.4 Acres at one of the higher elevations in Wake County. Although the home has been extensively renovated, distinctive features of the original structure have been retained including the hand hewn walls and beams, stone rubble chimneys, and heart pine floors.

The lot size and setting of the home offer privacy a world away, yet the proximity to I-540, RDU Airport, Research Triangle Park and Raleigh allow easy access and convenience to all the Triangle Area of North Carolina has to offer.

The floor plan has multiple living spaces including a paneled family room with hand carved railings, original log wall living room and a sunroom.  The kitchen was renovated in 2004 and features stainless appliances, granite countertops and birch cabinetry. The dining room overlooks the rear courtyard and gardens.

The master suite is located on the second floor of the main structure. This suite features a large sleeping room with a fireplace along with a renovated, modern bathroom with dual pedestal sinks and a separate dressing room.

The family/guest wing is the most recent addition to the structure. This space is accessed through the enclosed breezeway and features three additional bedrooms and two baths. A private sitting area for this wing with a fireplace has vaulted ceilings and bead board trim.

A detached oversized two car garage was constructed in the 1990s and has a heated and cooled bonus room upstairs. Now used by the current owners as musician rehearsal space, this space would make a marvelous studio or home office.

The multiple porches, gardens, courtyards, fishpond and expansive front yard offer exceptional outdoor living spaces. The home is also less than a mile from Falls Lake.

Noted in The Historic Architecture of Wake County, North Carolina (Lally, 1994), the original structure was constructed in the first half of the 19th century by Hillary Thompson. Hillary was the cousin of George Warren Thompson, a North Carolina State Senator from 1844-1849. The homestead was later acquired by Dempsey Adams, and then deeded to Dempsey's son, Jesse Martin Adams. The surrounding land came to be known as Adams Mountain.

In the last century, the homestead property was recombined into the subdivision also named Adams Mountain. This home is now part of the community and has access to the neighborhood amenities including a swimming pool and tennis courts.
