What is the Triangle?

The Triangle is the nickname for the area between and surrounding three cities: Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Each city has its own unique character and history - all are anchored by a world class university. The nickname comes from Research Triangle Park or RTP, which is located in the middle of the Triangle. Created in 1959 as a public and private research park, RTP is home to biotechnology, technology, and research organizations and is a major source of employment for the area. To learn more about RTP, go to www.rtp.org.

The Triangle covers multiple counties including Wake, Durham, Orange, Chatham and Johnston.  Within the Triangle, you will find a wide variety of towns and communities each with their own characteristics - this is a long list and includes Cary, Morrisville, Garner, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, and Wake Forest.
